Inspirational Conversations: Dreaming a Different Reality – 30 April

From the event description: ‘Writer Claire Corbett is fascinated by the future, and explores themes of science and genetic modification in her remarkable novel When We Have Wings. In this inspirational chat with Walter Mason, Claire will talk about how we can look more hopefully towards the future and what we can do as individuals to create a better world.’

I’ll have to think about that. I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun with this.

Griffith REVIEW 42: Once Upon a Time in Oz – Sydney Launch

So it’s funny, publication day sort of passed me by yesterday. As my story in this gorgeous anthology is a riff on Henry Lawson’s The Drover’s Wife from the point of view of the snake it’s appropriate I was too busy preparing our home and property against bushfire to take note. Bushfire is one of the main hazards the drover’s wife has to battle. We love a sunburnt country eh?

Once Upon a Time in Oz presents new stories by renowned writers including Cate Kennedy, Arnold Zable, Ali Alizadeh, Tony Birch, Marion Halligan, Margo Lanagan and Bruce Pascoe. Other writers including Kate Forsyth, Michelle Law, Jane Sullivan, Lucy Sussex and John Bryson examine through essay and memoir some of the mysteries of storytelling. And David Rowe takes us ‘Down the Abbott Hole’ in a cartoon essay. Once Upon a Time in Oz features Carmel Bird as contributing editor.

There are launches around the country for this book. If you’re in Sydney, I’d love to see you at the Sydney launch.

Themed Book Club

I love these photos from a Gold Coast book club’s discussion of When We Have Wings. I especially love the quotations.

Australian Society of Authors New Member Night August 17

I’m really looking forward to this – being part of a panel discussion to welcome new members to the ASA.

Event format: Members-only event. Opportunity for new members to socialise and learn about ASA, plus panel of authors and a reading by Ray Koppe Young Writers’ Residency winner Dimitra Harvey.

Panel topic: Authors and money: how authors meet their artistic and financial needs, opportunities that help them do this (grants, fellowships, non-arts work), how the changing nature of publishing is affecting the value and role of the author in society and how this in turn affects an author’s creative practices.

Landing on the Red Planet

Very much looking forward to August 6, when, all going well, the Mars Science Lab (MSL) ‘Curiosity’ will land on Mars!

Canberra Deep Space Network (CDSN) Tidbinbilla will be at the forefront on the day as it will receive the first signals from the Mars Rover and hopefully we will know that all is well. Canberra DSN is holding an all day Mars Rover Landing Party and I will be there, catching up with the space tweeps from the original launch tweetup in November 2011.

CDSCC: Mars Landing Party – Monday, 6 August 2012 – 3:31pm AEST Mars Science Laboratory – Entry, Descent and Landing

On Monday, 6 August, at 3:31pm, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is set to receive signals from NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory rover ‘Curiosity’ as it lands on the surface of the red planet.

You are invited to join us for this historic event and enjoy with other fellow space enthusiasts, the excitement and drama as the spacecraft carrying the rover enters and descends through the Martian atmosphere, and then safely lands ‘Curiosity’. We might even see the first photos from the surface!”
